Consumers are being forced to pay 10 times higher capacity charges despite unchanged electricity consumption since 2015, criticizes Dr. Gohar Ejaz.

Islamabad: Former caretaker federal minister Dr. Gohar Ejaz has criticized the government’s actions regarding electricity production, stating that while power consumption has remained at 13,000 megawatts since 2015, consumers are being charged 10 times higher capacity charges.

In a statement on social media platform X, Dr. Gohar Ejaz highlighted that in 2015, with a production capacity of 20,000 megawatts, the average consumption was 13,000 megawatts and capacity charges were Rs 200 billion. He pointed out that now, despite the installed capacity increasing to 43,400 megawatts, the consumption remains the same at 13,000 megawatts, but capacity charges have soared to Rs 2 trillion.

Dr. Ejaz criticized the imposition of such high capacity charges on consumers, mentioning that Rs 2 trillion is being paid to IPP plants for partial or zero electricity production. He questioned how the country can sustain itself with such IPP agreements in place.
