Former Interim Energy Minister Gohar Ejaz reveals massive capacity payments to Shehbaz Sharif’s family and associates in IPPs.

Former interim energy minister Gohar Ejaz has made startling revelations regarding Independent Power Producers (IPPs). He shared documents related to agreements and payments made to IPPs, which have gone viral on social media. According to these documents, Suleman Shehbaz, son of Shehbaz Sharif, received over 630 million rupees in capacity payments within three months. Suleman Shehbaz’s Chiniot Power Limited received 308 million rupees in January 2024 at 63% capacity, 231 million rupees in February at 65% capacity, and 99.9 million rupees in March at 27% capacity.

Additionally, Shehbaz Sharif’s wife, Nusrat Shehbaz, and his son, Hamza Shehbaz, are also shareholders in Chiniot Power. The documents further reveal that Javed Kiani, a close associate of Nawaz Sharif, received 119 million rupees in capacity payments over two months in 2024 for his IPP, Chanar Energy Limited. In February, his IPP operated at 48% capacity, and in March, at 42% capacity.
